Fostering connections between research, policy, and practice can generate innovative ideas beyond what is possible in any one sphere alone. Housing Day 2023 offers participants a chance to take stock of housing research and practice in Luxembourg, identify collaboration opportunities across different groups of stakeholders, and discuss policy relevant topics when it comes to housing in Luxembourg and abroad.
Housing mobility has at least three faces: mobility as physically navigating from your home outward to other important locations like the workplace, mobility as the ability to leverage housing to build wealth and become upwardly mobile, and mobility to secure the different kinds of housing you need over the life course. Each of these faces – physical, economic, and residential mobility – are shaped by the megatrend of increasing income and wealth inequality. What do these trends look like in Luxembourg, and what challenges and opportunities will they bring in the decades ahead? This invited talk was given at the Megatrends 2050 conference hosted by the Luxembourg Chamber of Deputies and the Luxembourg National Research Fund. Remarks start at minute 18:36.
Housing policies and housing markets drive some of the biggest inequalities in modern society. These inequalities go beyond the accumulation of housing wealth to affect life chances in general: educational and job opportunities, generational opportunities, and even the ease with which people can start a family. This talk examines the ways in which governmental policy interacts with housing to produce the economic and social inequalities we see today. It also introduces the PROPEL project (PROactive Policymaking for Equal Lives), funded by an FNR ATTRACT grant. PROPEL studies the politics of housing and seeks to generate policy options that promote equality.
